The Fields of Athenry

After sending the previous notes I began thinking that you may not know (or remember) the song.  As a result here is the Dubliners version.  The story goes back to the potato famine years and deals with a young father who steals corn to feed his family and then is imprisoned (by the Brits) leaving his wife and child by themselves.  Why the song is as popular as it is I'm not sure.  It is sung by the Irish at soccer games, at rugby games, and, as you might imagine, at any event when the English can be taunted.  Some of those examples can be found on YouTube as well.  It is a frequently sung ballad in the pubs.  Enjoy!
